Overview

Taeeumjowui-tang (also known as Taeumjowi-tang or TJT) is a traditional Korean herbal formulation originating from Sasang constitutional medicine. It consists of eight herbs and was first documented in the classic text "Donguisusebowon" by Lee Je-ma. Traditionally, it is prescribed for individuals classified as the Taeum type to treat stomach-related symptoms but has become widely used for obesity management and related metabolic disorders in Korea. Clinical studies and animal models have shown that Taeeumjowui-tang exerts anti-obesity effects, improves lipid profiles, and may also benefit atopic dermatitis (AD), especially when these conditions are comorbid. Mechanistically, it acts by downregulating inflammatory pathways including nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs such as ERK, JNK, p38), and hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α). These actions result in reduced inflammation markers such as interleukin-4 (IL-4), IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), immunoglobulin E levels, epidermal thickness, eosinophil/mast cell infiltration in skin lesions associated with AD and obesity[1][2][3][5][7]. It is most commonly administered orally.
