TAG-23 is a novel exercise-induced peptide that has demonstrated cardioprotective effects, particularly in the context of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. It functions by inhibiting the degradation of protein kinase G (PKG) through competitive binding, thereby attenuating the formation of the PKG–cCbl complex. This mechanism helps to reduce apoptosis, protect mitochondrial function, and decrease reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Studies have shown that TAG-23 can improve cell viability and ameliorate myocardial infarction and heart failure in preclinical models. It is being developed by Shanghai Tongren Hospital and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
