Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Taiglitazone is a small molecule thiazolidinedione (TZD) derivative developed by the Tianjin Institute of Pharmaceutical Research for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. As a member of the glitazone class, it acts as a selective agonist of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-gamma), a nuclear receptor that plays a central role in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism. By activating PPAR-gamma, taiglitazone enhances insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues such as adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and the liver, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. The drug has been evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials in China (e.g., CTR20181670) to assess its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetic profile in healthy volunteers.
