Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Taikokou Ointment is a traditional Japanese herbal (Kampo) topical medication developed and marketed by Melsmon Pharmaceutical. It is an over-the-counter (OTC) formulation based on the classical "Taitsukou" (or Tai-otsu-kou) formula, which has been used in East Asian medicine for centuries to treat various skin ailments. The ointment is composed of extracts from seven medicinal herbs: *Angelica sinensis* (Toki), *Cinnamomum cassia* (Keihi), *Rheum officinale* (Daio), *Paeonia lactiflora* (Shakuyaku), *Rehmannia glutinosa* (Jio), *Scrophularia ningpoensis* (Genjin), and *Angelica dahurica* (Byakushi), prepared in a base of sesame oil and beeswax. These components work synergistically to provide anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antibacterial effects, while also promoting tissue regeneration and blood circulation at the site of application. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of cuts, burns, bruises, eczema, dermatitis, and hemorrhoids.
