TAILOR phage cocktail

TAILOR phage cocktail is not a single drug product but a personalized medicine platform developed by the TAILOR (Tailored Antibacterials and Innovative Laboratories for Phage Research) initiative at Baylor College of Medicine. [7, 12] This platform creates customized bacteriophage cocktails for patients with antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. [7] The process involves isolating the specific bacterial strain from a patient, screening TAILOR's extensive phage library to identify viruses (bacteriophages) that effectively kill the bacteria, and then formulating these selected phages into a personalized therapeutic cocktail. [6, 11] These cocktails are developed for individual patients under compassionate use or Investigational New Drug (IND) applications submitted to the FDA. [6, 17] The mechanism of action is the targeted lysis (killing) of pathogenic bacteria by the bacteriophages in the cocktail. [9] The technology is being commercialized by a spin-off company, PHIOGEN. [8]
