Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Taiwanese green propolis ethanol extract (TGPE) is a unique botanical extract derived from propolis produced exclusively in Taiwan. It is chemically distinct from other propolis types, such as Brazilian propolis, due to its high concentration of prenylflavanones known as propolins (e.g., Propolin C, D, F, G). TGPE exhibits potent anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-microbial activities. Research in streptozotocin/high-fat-diet-induced rat models suggests that TGPE can delay the development and progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and reduce the severity of beta-cell failure. Its mechanism involves the modulation of lipid metabolism through the upregulation of hepatic genes, specifically Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha) and Cholesterol 7 alpha-hydroxylase (CYP7A1), which are involved in lipid catabolism and removal. Additionally, TGPE has been shown to attenuate systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, potentially serving as an alternative medicine for metabolic disorders.
