TAIZ-monocytes are a donor-derived cell therapy product consisting of monocytes that have been modified *ex vivo* to adopt a regulatory, immunosuppressive phenotype. Developed by researchers at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) and the University of Kiel, these cells were investigated in the TAIZ clinical trial (NCT01450189) for their ability to induce donor-specific immunological tolerance in patients undergoing cadaveric kidney transplantation. The treatment involves the administration of these modified donor cells to the recipient to suppress alloreactive T-cell responses, with the ultimate goal of reducing or eliminating the need for long-term maintenance immunosuppression. The TAIZ trial was terminated early due to challenges in patient recruitment.
