Overview

Talicia (formerly known as Heliconda or RHB-105) is an oral, fixed-dose combination therapy comprising the antibiotics amoxicillin and rifabutin, and the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) pantoprazole. Originally developed by the Australian biotechnology company Giaconda Limited and later acquired and brought to market by RedHill Biopharma, Talicia is specifically indicated for the treatment of *Helicobacter pylori* infection in adults. The combination is designed to address the increasing bacterial resistance to clarithromycin, which is a common component of standard triple therapies. Amoxicillin acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, while rifabutin inhibits DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Pantoprazole serves to increase gastric pH, which prevents the acid-mediated degradation of amoxicillin in the stomach and creates an environment more conducive to antibiotic activity against *H. pylori*. Talicia received FDA approval in November 2019.
