Overview

Talimogene laherparepvec is a genetically modified oncolytic virus therapy derived from Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1). It is designed to selectively replicate within tumor cells and produce the immune stimulatory protein granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF). The drug works through a dual mechanism of action: direct lysis of tumor cells and stimulation of local and systemic anti-tumor immune responses. When injected into melanoma lesions that cannot be surgically removed or have recurred after surgery, it causes the destruction of cancer cells, releases tumor antigens, and promotes an immune response against the cancer. Talimogene laherparepvec was developed primarily for unresectable cutaneous, subcutaneous, and nodal melanoma but is also being studied in other solid tumors[1][2][3][5][6].
