Overview

Tamanu oil is a botanical oil extracted from the nut kernels of the *Calophyllum inophyllum* tree, native to tropical Southeast Asia and Polynesia. It is distinguished by its high concentration of bioactive lipid components, including calophyllic acid, calophyllolide, and various coumarins, which confer potent anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. The oil is primarily utilized in dermatology for its cicatrizing (wound-healing) capabilities, as it has been shown to promote keratinocyte proliferation and collagen production. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators such as COX-2 and the neutralization of reactive oxygen species. While widely available as a cosmetic and nutraceutical product for conditions like acne, scarring, and psoriasis, it is not typically regulated as a prescription pharmaceutical.
