Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tamarind seed polysaccharide (TSP) is a natural, neutral, water-soluble galactoxyloglucan polymer extracted from the seeds of the tamarind tree (*Tamarindus indica*). It is widely used in ophthalmology as a tear substitute and lubricant for the treatment of dry eye syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). Due to its "mucin-like" branched molecular structure, which closely resembles transmembrane mucins (such as MUC1) on the corneo-conjunctival surface, TSP exhibits excellent mucoadhesive, mucomimetic, and pseudoplastic properties. It forms a long-lasting protective film on the ocular surface, stabilizing the tear film, reducing tear evaporation, and promoting corneal wound healing. Farmigea develops and markets TSP-based ophthalmic solutions in various concentrations (0.2%, 0.5%, 1.0%) both as single-agent formulations and in combination with hyaluronic acid.
