Overview

*Tamarindus indica* is a multipurpose tropical tree, commonly known as tamarind, whose fruit, pulp, seeds, leaves, bark, and roots are used in traditional medicine across Asia, Africa, and other tropical regions. Its extracts exhibit a wide range of pharmacological properties including anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antidiabetic, antimalarial, antimicrobial, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and hypolipidemic effects. The anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions are attributed to inhibition of various pathways and mediators such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), 5-lipoxygenase, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and NF-κB, while some analgesic effect may involve activation of peripheral and central opioidergic mechanisms. Additional traditional uses include treatment of abdominal pain, dysentery, wounds, constipation, and fever, with reports validating its use in managing diabetes, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disorders, skin conditions, and as a laxative. Key bioactive constituents include polyphenols (flavonoids, tannins), saponins, alkaloids, phenols, and terpenoids[1][2][3][4].
