Tamarindus indica seed extract is a plant-derived extract obtained from the seeds of the tamarind tree, Tamarindus indica. The extract contains various bioactive constituents, including high levels of polyphenols, flavonoids (such as catechin, epicatechin, procyanidins, isoquercetin, quercetin, rutin, and kaempferide), phenolic acids (protocathecuic acid, hydroxybenzoic acid), proteins, and essential minerals. Preclinical studies suggest that the extract exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antinociceptive, anti-arthritic, and antimicrobial activities. Mechanistically, the anti-inflammatory effects are attributed in part to inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), 5-lipoxygenase biosynthesis, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). The extract also demonstrates antioxidant activity through high phenolic and flavonoid content, which may protect against oxidative stress. In cosmetics, it is used for its moisturizing and soothing effects. No pharmaceutical companies are known to have developed tamarindus indica seed extract as an approved drug, but it is widely commercialized in dietary supplement and cosmetic industries[3][4][5][7][8].
