Overview

Tamarix gallica pollen is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the *Tamarix gallica* plant, commonly known as salt cedar or French tamarisk. It is an FDA-approved biological product used primarily as a diagnostic agent in vivo to detect hypersensitivity to tamarisk pollen. The extract is typically administered via percutaneous (skin prick) or intradermal injection. In sensitized individuals, the allergens present in the extract cross-link specific Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies bound to the surface of mast cells and basophils. This molecular interaction triggers the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators, resulting in a localized wheal-and-flare reaction. This diagnostic tool is essential for clinicians to confirm environmental allergies that may contribute to clinical conditions such as allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma, and allergic conjunctivitis.
