Overview

Tamra Bhasma is a traditional Ayurvedic herbo-metallic preparation derived from metallic copper through a complex process of purification (Shodhana), levigation (Bhavana), and incineration (Marana). This process transforms the bulk metal into a nanocrystalline, bioavailable form, typically consisting of copper oxides or sulfides depending on the processing media used (such as sulfur or herbal juices). It is extensively used in Ayurvedic practice for a wide range of conditions, including liver and spleen disorders, abdominal pain, heart disease, anemia, and tumors. Modern pharmacological studies have characterized Tamra Bhasma as a potent antioxidant that inhibits lipid peroxidation and enhances the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD). It also demonstrates antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties. While traditionally used for chronic systemic ailments, recent research has explored its potential as an antiviral agent against SARS-CoV-2 and as a component in wound-healing formulations.
