Tamsulosin is a selective alpha-1A and alpha-1B adrenergic receptor antagonist primarily used to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), such as difficulty urinating and urinary frequency in men[2][3][5]. By selectively blocking alpha-1A adrenergic receptors in the smooth muscle of the prostate and bladder neck—where these receptors are most prevalent—tamsulosin relaxes these muscles to improve urine flow and reduce BPH symptoms[2][7]. Its selectivity for alpha-1A over alpha-1B receptors results in fewer cardiovascular side effects compared to less selective agents[7]. Tamsulosin may also be used off-label for conditions like ureteral stones and prostatitis[5]. Developed by Astellas.
