Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tanacetum balsamita leaf extract is a botanical extract derived from the leaves of Tanacetum balsamita, a perennial herb in the Asteraceae family known commonly as costmary, alecost, or balsam herb. The extract has a longstanding history in traditional medicine, especially in regions of Southern Europe and Western Asia, for treating a variety of conditions such as diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, liver problems, skin infections, inflammation, fevers, menstrual disorders, and as an antispasmodic. Its mechanism of action is attributed primarily to its phytochemical constituents, notably carvone (a monoterpene), various flavonoids, phenolic acids, and sesquiterpene lactones, which confer antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, myorelaxant (through inhibition of calcium channels in smooth muscle), hepatoprotective, and antimicrobial properties. Modern in vitro and phytochemical studies have demonstrated the extract's activities including acetylcholinesterase and tyrosinase inhibition, α-glucosidase inhibition (antidiabetic effect), and cytotoxicity against certain cell lines. However, the extract is not established or regulated as a pharmaceutical drug and is primarily used in traditional medicine and as a dietary supplement[1][2][3][4][6].
