taniborbactam

Taniborbactam is a broad-spectrum, cyclic boronate beta-lactamase inhibitor (BLI) developed to restore the activity of beta-lactam antibiotics against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. It is most notably being studied in combination with cefepime, a fourth-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. Taniborbactam inhibits both serine- and metallo-beta-lactamases (Ambler classes A, C, D and class B MBLs such as VIM and NDM), which are enzymes that confer resistance to many beta-lactams including carbapenems. By inhibiting these enzymes, taniborbactam protects cefepime from degradation and extends its spectrum of activity against difficult-to-treat pathogens like carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) and carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA). The combination is under development for the treatment of complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs), including acute pyelonephritis, as well as hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia in adults[1][4][6][7].
