Tannic acid is a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound classified as a hydrolysable tannin. It is found in various plants, especially in the nutgalls of certain oak species (Quercus infectoria and others), and is used both medicinally and industrially. Historically used as part of the "universal antidote" for poisoning, it now finds application primarily as a topical agent for cold sores, fever blisters, diaper rash, minor burns or sunburns, prickly heat, poison ivy exposure, ingrown toenails, sore throat or tonsils, spongy or receding gums, skin rashes and to stop bleeding. It can also be taken orally for bleeding disorders (such as chronic diarrhea or dysentery), bloody urine, painful joints and persistent coughs. Pharmacologically it acts mainly through its astringent properties—dehydrating tissues locally to reduce secretions—and by forming protective layers on mucosal surfaces. Tannic acid exhibits antiviral and antibacterial effects; it also has antioxidant/free radical scavenging activity and anti-inflammatory properties[2][5][7]. In vitro studies suggest neuroprotective effects via inhibition of β-secretase (BACE1) activity (implicated in Alzheimer’s disease) and tau aggregation[5][7]. Its poor oral bioavailability limits systemic effects; most actions are local.
