Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tannic acid protein yeast powder is an oral combination drug product used for the treatment of diarrhea in children, particularly that caused by enteritis or indigestion. [24, 29] The product is manufactured by several companies, including Jinhua Enterprise. [22] Upon oral administration, the tannic acid protein component is broken down by intestinal enzymes, which slowly releases tannic acid. [17, 22] The tannic acid acts as an astringent by precipitating proteins on the surface of the intestinal mucosa. This forms a protective film that reduces irritation, decreases inflammatory secretions, and lessens intestinal peristalsis, thereby providing an antidiarrheal effect. [17, 21, 22] The second component, dry yeast (from brewer's yeast), is rich in B vitamins and provides an auxiliary therapeutic benefit for associated indigestion. [17, 22] The formulation is approved and available as an over-the-counter powder. [22]
