Tanogitran (BIBT 986 BS) is an investigational small molecule anticoagulant developed by Boehringer Ingelheim for the treatment and prevention of thromboembolic disorders. It represents a novel class of anticoagulants characterized by a dual mechanism of action, competitively inhibiting both Factor Xa (FXa) and Factor IIa (thrombin). By targeting these two critical enzymes in the coagulation cascade, tanogitran is designed to provide potent and predictable antithrombotic effects. Clinical development included Phase 1 studies evaluating intravenous administration in healthy subjects, where the drug demonstrated dose-dependent anticoagulant activity as measured by parameters such as activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), thrombin time, and ecarin clotting time.
