Overview

**Tanshinol borneol ester** is an experimental synthetic small-molecule ester, also called DBZ, created by covalently linking tanshinol and borneol into one chemical entity. It has been investigated in animal and cell models for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disorders, including atherosclerosis, ischemia-related brain injury, and pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy. Published preclinical studies report anti-atherosclerotic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, pro-angiogenic, and anti-ischemic effects. Reported pathway-level effects include activation of Akt and mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling during angiogenesis, modulation of oxidative-stress responses involving mTOR, beta-transducin repeat-containing protein, and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, and suppression of inflammatory signaling in experimental systems. DBZ has low aqueous solubility and a short half-life, prompting investigation of nanostructured lipid-carrier formulations. No approved human medicinal product or confirmed registered clinical trial for DBZ was identified.
