Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tanyu Tongzhi Fang (痰瘀同治方, also known as the Tanyu Tongzhi Formula or TTF) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) prescription designed to treat conditions characterized by both phlegm and blood stasis. The formula is based on the principle of simultaneously resolving phlegm and invigorating blood circulation, which are considered key pathological factors in diseases such as coronary heart disease (CHD) and atherosclerosis in the context of TCM[6][8]. The typical composition includes herbs such as Trichosanthes kirilowii (全瓜蒌), Salvia miltiorrhiza (丹参), Allium macrostemon (薤白), Hirudo nipponica Whitman (水蛭), Acorus tatarinowii Schott (石菖蒲), Poria cocos Wolf. (茯苓), Curcuma aromatica Salisb. (郁金), and Citrus reticulata Blanco pericarpium (陈皮)[1]. These ingredients work synergistically to dissolve phlegm, promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis, regulate qi flow, relieve pain, calm the mind, and support cardiovascular health[1][6]. Pharmacological studies have shown that this formula can alleviate clinical symptoms of CHD patients by lowering serum lipid levels and inflammatory markers; it also delays atherosclerotic plaque progression in animal models. Mechanistically, it promotes alternative macrophage activation via upregulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) expression while inhibiting AKT/ERK phosphorylation pathways[8]. TTF is produced under Good Manufacturing Practice standards at Zhejiang Chinese Medical University’s First Affiliated Hospital for use as granules or liquid extracts[6].
