Overview

TAP Block-MetroHealth Medical Center-postoperative pain refers to a specific regional anesthetic intervention evaluated in a clinical trial (NCT01479270) for managing pain after total laparoscopic hysterectomy. The intervention consists of a bilateral ultrasound-guided Transversus Abdominis Plane (TAP) block using 20 mL of 0.5% ropivacaine combined with epinephrine (1:200,000) on each side. Ropivacaine is a long-acting amide local anesthetic that inhibits nerve conduction by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in the neuronal membrane. Epinephrine is included as an adjuvant to cause local vasoconstriction, thereby prolonging the duration of the anesthetic effect and reducing systemic absorption. Despite its use in other surgical contexts, this specific study conducted at MetroHealth Medical Center found that the TAP block did not significantly improve quality of recovery or reduce pain scores following laparoscopic hysterectomy.
