Tapectam

Tapectam is a combination antibiotic product marketed in Colombia, consisting of piperacillin, a broad-spectrum penicillin-class antibiotic, and tazobactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Piperacillin works by binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, thereby inhibiting the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Tazobactam is a penicillanic acid sulfone derivative that functions as a suicide inhibitor of many beta-lactamases, which are enzymes produced by bacteria to confer resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. By inhibiting these enzymes, tazobactam protects piperacillin from degradation and extends its spectrum of activity to include many beta-lactamase-producing bacteria. Tapectam is indicated for the treatment of severe systemic and/or local bacterial infections, including nosocomial pneumonia, ventilator-associated pneumonia, complicated intra-abdominal infections, and skin and soft tissue infections in adults and pediatric patients.
