Overview

Tar extract in oil is a topical dermatological preparation containing an extract of coal tar dissolved or suspended in an oily base. It is used primarily for the treatment of skin conditions such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, and other disorders characterized by itching, scaling, and inflammation. The mechanism of action involves keratoplastic effects—promoting the shedding of dead skin cells from the top layer and slowing down excessive growth of skin cells—which helps reduce scaling and dryness. Coal tar also exhibits anti-inflammatory and antipruritic (anti-itch) properties. Tar extract preparations may be used alone or as part of combination therapy with ultraviolet B (UVB) phototherapy to enhance efficacy[2][4][6]. The effectiveness can vary depending on concentration and formulation; both crude coal tar and refined extracts are used clinically.
