Taraxacum officinale essential oil, derived from the common dandelion, is a complex mixture of volatile compounds investigated for its antioxidant and antiproliferative properties. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that the oil contains approximately 34 compounds, with major constituents contributing to its biological activity. In vivo models of acetaminophen-induced oxidative stress have shown that the oil protects liver and kidney tissues by enhancing the activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes, including catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione, while simultaneously reducing lipid peroxidation as measured by malondialdehyde levels. Additionally, the oil exhibits significant in vitro antiproliferative effects against cancer cell lines such as HeLa, suggesting potential applications in oncology and as a protective agent against oxidative damage.
