Overview

Taribavirin is an investigational antiviral drug and a prodrug of ribavirin. It is designed to be converted into ribavirin in the body and was developed to treat hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection with the aim of reducing the risk of hemolytic anemia associated with ribavirin therapy. Taribavirin acts as a nucleoside analogue that inhibits viral RNA synthesis by targeting viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase after conversion to its active form. The drug was primarily developed by Valeant Pharmaceuticals for use in combination with interferon-based therapies for chronic hepatitis C.
