Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tarsum is an over-the-counter (OTC) topical medicated shampoo and gel developed by Summers Laboratories for the treatment of inflammatory scalp conditions such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and severe dandruff. The formulation combines coal tar (10% Liquor Carbonis Detergens, equivalent to 2% coal tar) with salicylic acid in a specialized base. Coal tar functions as an anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory agent, helping to slow the excessive growth of skin cells and reduce the itching and redness associated with scalp disorders. Salicylic acid acts as a keratolytic agent, which softens and facilitates the removal of scales and plaques. The product is designed with a unique applicator tip that allows for direct application to the scalp as a pre-treatment before rinsing, or it can be used as a standard medicated shampoo.
