Tart cherry (Prunus cerasus), commonly known as sour or Montmorency cherry, is a fruit rich in phytochemicals such as anthocyanins and melatonin. It is used primarily as a dietary supplement for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Tart cherries are marketed for potential benefits including improved muscle recovery after exercise, enhanced sleep quality due to increased exogenous melatonin levels, support of cardiovascular health, and possible roles in managing arthritis and gout. While animal studies demonstrate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and some small clinical trials suggest benefits for sleep quality and muscle soreness post-exercise, robust evidence from large-scale clinical trials is lacking for most indications[1][2][5]. Tart cherries are widely consumed in food products; supplements are available as juice concentrates or extracts.
