Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tart cherry concentrate is a dietary supplement derived from the juice of tart cherries (Prunus cerasus), most commonly the Montmorency variety. The product is made by removing much of the water content from tart cherry juice, resulting in a concentrated liquid that can be diluted before consumption[2][7]. Tart cherries are rich in polyphenols—especially anthocyanins—which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties[1][2][7]. The primary mechanisms attributed to tart cherry concentrate include reduction of inflammation (possibly via cyclooxygenase enzyme inhibition), antioxidant activity (scavenging free radicals), and provision of exogenous melatonin which may help regulate sleep-wake cycles[1][5][6][7]. It has been studied for potential benefits in exercise recovery, muscle soreness reduction, improved sleep quality, blood pressure regulation, gout management, and arthritis-related inflammation; however, clinical evidence remains limited or equivocal for most indications[1][4][5]. Tart cherry products are generally recognized as safe when consumed as food but may cause gastrointestinal discomfort or interact with certain medications at higher doses[6].
