Taurine + sodium chloride is an intravenous neuroprotective formulation developed by the Beijing Neurosurgical Institute for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. Taurine is a semi-essential sulfur-containing amino acid that functions as an endogenous inhibitory neurotransmitter and a potent antioxidant. In the context of stroke, it acts as an agonist at GABA-A and glycine receptors, helping to counteract glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. Additionally, taurine serves as a scavenger for reactive oxygen species, stabilizes mitochondrial membranes, and modulates intracellular calcium levels to prevent neuronal apoptosis. The sodium chloride component serves as an isotonic vehicle for delivery. This therapy is currently being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials to assess its efficacy in improving functional recovery and reducing infarct volume in patients following an acute ischemic event.
