Overview

Taurochenodeoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring bile acid formed in the liver by conjugation of chenodeoxycholic acid with taurine. It acts as a bile salt, facilitating the emulsification and absorption of lipids such as cholesterol in the intestine. As a medication, it reduces cholesterol formation in the liver and is used primarily as a choleretic (to increase bile secretion) and cholagogue (to promote bile discharge into the duodenum). Taurochenodeoxycholic acid is also being investigated for its potential roles in inflammation and cancer therapy. Its mechanism of action includes acting as a detergent to solubilize fats and possibly modulating hepatocellular exocytosis via calcium-dependent pathways[1][3][4][6].
