Overview

A combination drug used as a catheter lock solution in hemodialysis and other central venous access situations, comprising taurolidine (antimicrobial), citrate (anticoagulant), and urokinase (thrombolytic). Taurolidine is a non-antibiotic agent with broad-spectrum antimicrobial action effective against bacteria (including MRSA and VRE) and fungi, and inhibits biofilm formation. Citrate at 4% acts as an anticoagulant to prevent clotting within the catheter. Urokinase, present typically at 5000 IU/mL or 25000 IU/5 mL, acts as a fibrinolytic agent that dissolves early blood clots (via plasminogen activation). The combination is designed to maintain catheter patency, reduce catheter thrombosis and malfunction, while simultaneously decreasing the risks of catheter-related infections during intermittent use in dialysis. It is used primarily in patients receiving regular hemodialysis via tunneled catheters and has demonstrated reduced catheter exchange rates and emergency thrombolysis needs in clinical trials compared with alternative lock solutions. The product is commonly marketed as TauroLock-U25.000 or TauroLock Urokinase and is intended for instillation into central venous access devices between hemodialysis sessions[1][2][3][4][5][7].
