TauroLock-Hep500 is a specialized catheter lock solution designed to prevent catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) and maintain catheter patency in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Developed by TauroPharm GmbH and extensively studied in Phase 4 trials at Ain Shams University, the solution is a triple-combination product containing taurolidine (1.35%), citrate (4%), and heparin (500 IU/mL). Taurolidine is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that prevents biofilm formation by reacting with bacterial cell wall components. Citrate acts as an anticoagulant by chelating calcium and provides synergistic antimicrobial effects. Heparin is included at a concentration of 500 IU/mL to provide additional anticoagulation and prevent catheter thrombosis. The solution is instilled into the catheter lumen at the end of dialysis sessions and removed before the next treatment, significantly reducing inflammatory markers and infection rates compared to standard heparin locks.
