TauroPace

TauroPace is an antimicrobial irrigation solution containing taurolidine, a broad-spectrum, non-antibiotic antiseptic agent designed to prevent infections associated with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). Developed by TauroPharm, it is used during surgical procedures to wash external hardware surfaces—such as leads, suture sleeves, and pulse generators—and to irrigate the subcutaneous device pocket. The active ingredient, taurolidine, acts by releasing methylol groups that chemically react with bacterial cell wall components (specifically peptidoglycan and lipopolysaccharides) and neutralize bacterial endotoxins and exotoxins. This mechanism prevents microbial colonization and the formation of bacterial biofilms without the risk of developing antibiotic resistance. TauroPace is CE-marked in Europe as a medical device and is primarily indicated for patients undergoing CIED implantation, revision, or replacement to reduce the risk of major complications such as pocket infections, lead-related endocarditis, and systemic sepsis.
