Tauroselcholic acid (SeHCAT) is a synthetic, radiolabeled analog of the naturally occurring bile acid conjugate taurocholic acid. It incorporates the gamma-emitting isotope selenium-75 and is used as a diagnostic agent to assess bile acid malabsorption, particularly in patients with chronic diarrhea or suspected ileal dysfunction. After oral administration, it mimics the physiological behavior of natural bile acids—being absorbed in the terminal ileum and undergoing enterohepatic circulation. Its retention or excretion can be measured using gamma cameras to evaluate intestinal absorption and function. The test has largely replaced older methods for assessing bile salt turnover due to its accuracy and convenience[1][4][5][7][8].
