Overview
TauroSept is an antimicrobial catheter lock solution developed by Geistlich Pharma AG. It contains 2% taurolidine, a synthetic antimicrobial agent derived from the amino acid taurine. Classified as a medical device, TauroSept is used for the prevention of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) and the maintenance of device patency in central vascular access devices (CVADs). It is administered via local/intraluminal instillation into the catheter between treatments. Taurolidine exerts broad-spectrum activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as yeasts and molds, by reacting with components of the microbial cell wall and toxins, which minimizes the risk of developing bacterial resistance.
