Overview

Tavilermide is a first-in-class, small-molecule, cyclic tripeptide peptidomimetic that acts as a selective partial agonist of the Tropomyosin receptor kinase A (TrkA) receptor (nerve growth factor receptor). It mimics nerve growth factor (NGF) and activates and potentiates the effects of NGF, which is essential for the health and healing of the ocular surface. Tavilermide is being developed as an ophthalmic solution (eye drop) primarily for the treatment of dry eye disease. The drug facilitates protein secretions from conjunctival glands to help maintain ocular surface lubrication. It was originally synthesized by researchers at Texas A&M University and is under development by Mimetogen Pharmaceuticals. As of June 2024, it has reached phase III clinical trials for dry eye disease in the United States[1][6][7].
