Drug intelligence / Profile preview
TAVT-119 is a topical gel formulation of amlodipine besylate, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker, currently under development by Tavanta Therapeutics for the treatment of chronic anal fissures. The drug is applied perianally to exert a local effect by relaxing the smooth muscle of the internal anal sphincter. This relaxation reduces intra-anal pressure and improves local blood flow, which are critical factors in promoting the healing of anal fissures. TAVT-119 is designed to minimize systemic absorption, thereby reducing the risk of systemic side effects typically associated with oral calcium channel blockers, such as hypotension or peripheral edema. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials.
