Overview

Taxilli herba (桑寄生), also known as Sang Ji Sheng or mulberry mistletoe stem, is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb derived from the dried stems and leaves of Taxillus chinensis or related species in the Loranthaceae family. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is classified as a wind-dampness-dispelling and tendon/bone-strengthening medicinal. Its main actions include tonifying the liver and kidney, strengthening tendons and bones, dispelling wind-dampness (used for joint pain/arthralgia), nourishing blood to calm the fetus (used for threatened abortion), relieving rheumatic conditions such as lower back/knee weakness or pain due to liver/kidney deficiency with wind-dampness. It is also used for hypertension and abnormal uterine bleeding. The herb contains multiple active constituents including avicularin which has been shown to inhibit fatty acid synthase in research studies[2][3][5][7].
