Overview

Taxonid is a brand name for nitazoxanide, a synthetic nitrothiazolyl-salicylamide derivative with broad-spectrum antiprotozoal and antiviral activity. It functions as a prodrug that is rapidly hydrolyzed to its active metabolite, tizoxanide. The primary mechanism of action against anaerobic protozoa and bacteria involves the non-competitive inhibition of the pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFO) enzyme, which is essential for electron transfer reactions in anaerobic energy metabolism. Beyond its antiparasitic effects, nitazoxanide has demonstrated antiviral properties by interfering with host-regulated pathways involved in viral protein biogenesis and inhibiting the maturation of viral glycoproteins. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of diarrhea caused by *Giardia lamblia* or *Cryptosporidium parvum* and has been investigated for its potential in treating viral respiratory infections.
