Overview

TAXUS Atom refers to a family of paclitaxel-eluting coronary stent systems developed by Boston Scientific for the treatment of coronary artery disease in small vessels (diameters as small as 2.25 mm). The product line includes the first-generation TAXUS Express2 Atom and the second-generation TAXUS Liberté Atom. These are drug-device combination products consisting of a metallic stent platform coated with a polymer that provides controlled release of paclitaxel. Paclitaxel acts as an antirestenotic agent by stabilizing microtubules, which inhibits smooth muscle cell migration and proliferation, thereby preventing neointimal hyperplasia and restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention.
