Overview

TAXUS Liberté is a second-generation paclitaxel-eluting coronary stent system developed by Boston Scientific for the treatment of coronary artery disease. It consists of a 316L stainless steel stent platform (the Liberté stent) coated with a proprietary slow-release formulation of paclitaxel in a Translute polymer carrier. The device is designed to prevent neointimal hyperplasia and restenosis following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Paclitaxel, the active pharmaceutical ingredient, works by stabilizing microtubules and inhibiting cell division, thereby reducing the overgrowth of smooth muscle cells within the stented vessel. The system features thin struts and flexible cell geometry to improve deliverability and ensure uniform drug distribution. It received FDA approval in October 2008 and was launched in international markets starting in 2005.
