Overview

The TAXUS stent is a drug-eluting coronary stent system developed by Boston Scientific for the treatment of coronary artery disease. It consists of a metallic stent platform coated with a proprietary polymer, Translute, which facilitates the controlled, sustained release of the active pharmaceutical ingredient, paclitaxel. Paclitaxel is a small molecule that binds to tubulin and stabilizes microtubules, thereby inhibiting the migration and proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells—a process known as neointimal hyperplasia that leads to restenosis. The TAXUS product line includes several generations: the TAXUS Express (stainless steel), TAXUS Liberté (thinner stainless steel struts), and TAXUS Element (platinum-chromium, also known as ION in the United States). It was one of the first drug-eluting stents to receive FDA approval (2003) and has been widely used in percutaneous coronary interventions.
