Overview

Tazarotene is a third-generation topical retinoid used primarily for the treatment of plaque psoriasis and acne vulgaris. It is also indicated for reducing facial wrinkling and discoloration associated with photoaged skin. Tazarotene is a prodrug that undergoes rapid conversion in the skin to its active metabolite, tazarotenic acid. The active form binds to all three members of the retinoic acid receptor (RAR) family—RARα, RARβ, and RARγ—with relative selectivity for RARβ and RARγ. This binding modulates gene expression involved in cell proliferation and differentiation. The drug exerts antiproliferative effects on keratinocytes, normalizes their differentiation, and downregulates markers of inflammation[2][4][5][6]. Tazarotene was originally developed by Allergan.
