tazobactam

Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor used in combination with certain beta-lactam antibiotics, such as piperacillin or ceftolozane, to treat bacterial infections. It works by irreversibly inhibiting bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes, which are responsible for breaking down and inactivating many penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics. By blocking these enzymes, tazobactam protects the partner antibiotic from degradation and extends its spectrum of activity against organisms that produce beta-lactamases. Tazobactam itself has minimal antibacterial activity when used alone and is not administered as a monotherapy[2].
