Overview

Tazovid is an orally administered small molecule antiviral combination therapy developed by Fujian Akeylink Biotechnology, a subsidiary of Cosunter Pharmaceutical. It is approved in China for the treatment of COVID-19. The drug consists of atilotrelvir, a potent inhibitor of the SARS-CoV-2 3C-like (3CL) protease (also known as Mpro or nsp5), and ritonavir, which serves as a pharmacokinetic booster. By inhibiting the 3CL protease, atilotrelvir prevents the cleavage of viral polyproteins, thereby halting viral replication. Ritonavir is co-packaged to inhibit the CYP3A-mediated metabolism of atilotrelvir, increasing its systemic exposure and allowing for a lower daily dosage. Tazovid has demonstrated broad-spectrum activity against multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants, including Omicron and XBB, and was the first 3CL protease inhibitor to show superior efficacy in a head-to-head clinical trial against Paxlovid.
