TC-220 is a proprietary boronated amino acid analog developed by TAE Life Sciences for use in Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). As a small molecule compound, it is designed to deliver Boron-10 selectively to cancer cells with high efficiency. The therapeutic mechanism involves loading tumor cells with boron and subsequently exposing them to a low-energy neutron beam; this triggers a localized nuclear fission reaction that releases high-energy alpha particles and lithium nuclei, destroying the tumor cells while sparing adjacent healthy tissue. TC-220 is intended to improve upon the standard-of-care boron carrier, boronophenylalanine (BPA), by offering enhanced solubility, prolonged tumor retention, and more consistent boron delivery across various tumor types. It is currently being investigated for the treatment of several solid tumors, including glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), breast cancer, head and neck cancer, and melanoma.
