TCB-2 is a synthetic psychedelic research chemical belonging to the phenethylamine, 2C, and benzocyclobutene families, structurally related to 2C-B. It was first described in 2006 by Thomas McLean and colleagues in the laboratory of David E. Nichols at Purdue University. TCB-2 functions as a highly potent agonist for serotonin 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C receptors. It is primarily utilized as a pharmacological tool in scientific research to investigate the mechanisms of serotonin receptors and their potential roles in various neurological and psychiatric conditions. Preclinical studies in animals have explored its effects in models of alcohol use disorder, schizophrenia, and neuropathic pain. While it exhibits psychedelic-like effects in animals, its hallucinogenic properties in humans are not firmly established, and its route of administration and properties in humans are largely unknown. TCB-2 is not approved for clinical use.
